Safety & compliance
Everyone goes home at the end of the hitch.
Operators ask about our safety record before they ask about our rates, and they should. Here is all of it, including the part most consulting firms leave off.
Certification
What we hold.
- COR certified through Energy Safety Canada, externally audited every year and maintained without a lapse since 2013.
- ISNetworld — member in good standing, grade A.
- Avetta — registered and current.
- Comply Works — registered and current.
- $5M commercial general liability, plus professional liability and full WCB coverage in Alberta, BC and Saskatchewan. Certificates on request, same day.
Tickets
What every consultant carries.
The one rule
Stop-work authority is absolute.
Any Kestrel consultant can shut down any job, at any hour, for any safety reason, without calling the office first. They will not be second-guessed, they will not lose the rotation, and we will back them to the operator in writing.
It has been used eleven times in eighteen years. On two of those occasions we were wrong and it cost the operator a day. We would do it again both times.
In practice
What this looks like on location.
- Pre-job hazard assessment before every task, written, with the crew that is doing the work — not filled out afterward in the doghouse.
- Tailgate meeting every tour change, and again whenever the scope changes or a new vendor arrives on location.
- H2S contingency drills run for real on every sour job, with muster and monitor checks, not signed off as done.
- Near-miss reporting with no blame attached. We record roughly thirty a year. An outfit reporting zero is not safer, it is just not reporting.
- Fatigue is treated as a hazard. If a consultant has driven six hours to get to your location, they are not starting a twelve-hour tour that night.
- Incident investigation within 24 hours, findings shared with the operator whether or not they reflect well on us.
The part others leave off
We have had recordable injuries — three since 2008. A hand caught in a tong door, a slip on ice, and a back strain lifting a mat. Each one was investigated and the findings went to the operator. Any consulting firm claiming a spotless twenty-year record is either very lucky or not counting properly.
